Techno-economic optimization model for polygeneration hybrid energy storage systems using biogas and batteries

Abstract Renewable energy polygeneration systems are a viable alternative to fossil-fuel based systems, but storage solutions may be necessary when aiming for high sustainability and autonomy. As each technology has different strengths weaknesses, combinations of various lead better techno-economic performance than singular approaches. To this purpose, an optimization model including novel dispatch control strategy hybrid system (HESS) is proposed, which uses biogas long-term batteries short-term storage. The optimizes minimum lifetime costs while exploiting the biomass resources with maximum efficiency quantifying additional solar battery capacities needed. It applied in case study innovative biomass-based rural locality Bolivia serve electricity, potable water, bio-slurry as fertilizer. results indicate that even maximized resource conversion, large PV satisfy electricity demand locality. Despite investment costs, would cost 22% less over project reference being dependent on fuel price changes. also reduce CO2-emissions by 98%.
